How to make the most out of your natural lighting

Unlike electronically generated light, natural light is actually good for humans. Exposure to natural light helps us absorb vitamin D, a substance necessary to regulate calcium and phosphorus,  important for both children and adults. Natural light also helps us avoid seasonal affective disorder (SAD); a type of depression associated with insufficient sun exposure.

However, to let the sun in,  we have to open our blinds or curtains and give up privacy, right? Not really.

The balance between allowing natural light to enter your home and maintaining privacy has always been considered. In some rooms, total privacy may not be as important as in others, but for rooms where you want to limit prying eyes and still enjoy the light, there are some great options to consider.

Light, Privacy, and Vertex blinds

For those who are concerned about privacy but still expect outside light, few window furnishing is as versatile as Vertex blinds.

Using Venetian blinds to control light

Regardless of whether you opt for a wooden blind or an aluminium blind, you can benefit from exactly the intensity of light you want while maintaining your privacy. Other styles of window furnishing, be it curtains, roller blinds or Roman blinds, are either open or closed without offering versatility. With a wand, you can tilt the slats slightly to find the perfect light level, but if the blinds are not fully open, you can still get the perfect privacy from the outside world.

Balance privacy and light with Duplex blinds

Duplex blinds, also known as zebra blinds and day and night blinds, are made from alternating strips of material that provide different levels of transparency and a modern striped effect, all in an eye-catching window furnishing. When a duplex blind is rolled down, its alternating stripes gracefully slide past each other, alternating between a dark block of colour and a stylish set of stripes. When set as a block colour, duplex blinds to block light, but when striped they let light through without sacrificing privacy. The flexibility offered by duplex blinds makes them an exceptional choice for living rooms, dining rooms and even for bedrooms.

Embracing the dark side

The light is pretty good, but sometimes we need absolute darkness. The need for darkness is most apparent when it comes to bedtime, and for good reason.

Exposure to light can affect the quality of our sleep, which in turn can affect our health and happiness. For rooms where darkness is very important and you really want to fight outside light,  consider blackout blinds or include a special blackout lining with your purchase.
